GOD i had so blissfully forgotten about buffy becoming a cop in the dark horse comics. still can't believe they did that as if a) she didn't canonically react with visceral disgust at being told she'd be suited for a job in law enforcement at her careers fair b) the only career path she ever showed any enthusiasm for wasn't "high school guidance counsellor"

speaking of buffyverse things that have been on my mind today, and I'm saying this as someone whose only dark horse comics knowledge is comes from the angel and faith comics and a quick look over some of the wiki articles about the after the fall comics to try and fill in what happened between ats and a&f so maybe someone whose actually read those comics would be able to explain it, but genuine question time. did the writers just. forget. to establish gunn getting his memories of connor back?

bc like as far as i can tell the timeline goes end of season 4: all of AI lose their memories of connor except angel -> end-ish of season 5: connor wesley and illyria/fred all regain their memories but gunn and lorne do not -> after the fall: gunn and connor apparently interact in at least some capacity but as far as I can tell from the wiki there's no acknowledgement of what i would describe as the rather massive elephant in the room that gunn should not know who connor is at this point -> angel and faith: gunn not only knows that connor is angel's son but is keeping tabs on him for angel. so like I'm hoping after the fall does address this and it's just not mentioned on the wiki because otherwise the writers just straight up forgot about a fairly massive plot development. and i mean it's not like i'd be surprised by the writers forgetting about gunn yet again but i'm sure the bar can always go lower

about to overturn one of my most long-held principles and start reading the dark horse buffyverse comics literally just bc i'm sick in the head about angel and faith and i need to read their silly little series where they're roommates. anyway i did not realise this thing is apparently set in london i might potentially become very annoying about this

while I'm generally not a fan of the buffy and angel continuation comics just on principle (not getting too into it now bc that's not the point of the post but in the simplest terms I tend to take the stance that the shows' finales work as endings and these stories aren't going to be improved by extending them) BUT one thing I will say in their favour is that I feel like they really do embrace the freedom of comics compared to tv in a way that I really like, and I don't always get that feeling from tv tie in comics. at the end of the day a lot of the shows' style came from working with limitations in budget and practicality wrt make up, effects, stunts, all that kind of stuff, and I appreciate that the comics are willing to veer away from that style when it enhances them. I like that they get to be WAY more creative with the monster designs in the comics because the only limit is what they can draw! I like that the angel and faith comics will show angel and faith just having casual conversations while leaping between rooftops because they don't have to worry about the logistics of doing stunts like that! it's often very minor stuff but it's still neat and it feels like you're getting something out of the comics you can't get from the shows!

mostly i think the angel and faith comics have been delivering but it is killing me slightly that gunn, despite as far as i can tell being alive and well and still friends with angel, has only appeared for one arc in which he did nothing and was absent most of the time. i would have preferred it if he was just not in the comic at all at this rate at least then i could just put his absence down to inscrutable season 8 comics reasons and leave it at that
